Why z > 1 radio - loud galaxies are commonly located in proto - clusters

چکیده
Distant powerful radio-loud active galactic nuclei (RLAGN) tend to reside in dense environments and are commonly found in proto-clusters at z > 1.3. We examine whether this occurs because RLAGN are hosted by massive galaxies which preferentially reside in rich environments. We compare the environments of powerful RLAGN at 1.3 < z < 3.2 from the CARLA survey to a sample of radio-quiet galaxies matched in mass and redshift. We find the environments of RLAGN are significantly denser than those of radio-quiet galaxies, implying that not more than 50% of massive galaxies in this epoch can host powerful radio-loud jets. This is not an observational selection effect as we find no evidence to suggest it is easier to observe the radio emission when the galaxy resides in a dense environment. We therefore suggest that the dense Mpc-scale environment fosters the formation of a radio-jet from an AGN. We show that the number density of potential RLAGN host galaxies is consistent with every > 1014 M⊙ cluster having experienced powerful radio-loud feedback of duration ∼60 Myr during 1.3 < z < 3.2. This feedback could heat the intracluster medium to the extent of 0.51 keV per gas particle, which could limit the amount of gas available for further star formation in the proto-cluster galaxies.

Clustering and Proto-Clusters in the Early Universe
The clustering properties of clusters, galaxies and AGN as a function of redshift are briefly discussed. It appears that extremely red objects at z ∼ 1, and objects with J − K > 1.7 and photometric redshifts 2 < zphot < 4 are highly clustered, indicating that a majority of these objects constitutes the progenitors of nearby ellipticals. Similarly clustered seem luminous radio galaxies at z ∼ 1,...
متن کاملProto-clusters and the clustering of distant galaxies and radio sources
The clustering properties of objects in 3 different radio surveys (NVSS, FIRST and BOOTES-WSRT) and 2 near-infrared surveys (the “Daddi field” and the FIRES survey) are investigated and compared with studies of various samples of galaxies, AGN and clusters. At z ∼ 1, it seems that the 2dF optical quasars have a correlation length a factor of about 2 less than powerful radio galaxies at similar ...

We have carried out narrow band imaging targeted at the Lyα line of emitters associated with radio galaxies at 2 < z < 5. Subsequent spectroscopy has confirmed the identity of > 120 Lyα emitters and led to the discovery of six proto-clusters up to z = 4.1 with velocity dispersions between 300 and 1000 km s. The number of emission line galaxies in the observed fields is four to fifteen times hig...
متن کاملTunable-filter Imaging of Quasar Fields at Z ∼ 1. Ii. the Star-forming Galaxy Environments of Radio-loud Quasars
We have scanned the fields of six radio-loud quasars using the Taurus Tunable Filter to detect redshifted [O ii]λ3727 line-emitting galaxies at redshifts 0.8 < z < 1.3. Forty-seven new emission-line galaxy (ELG) candidates are found. This number corresponds to an average space density about 100 times that found locally and, at L([O ii]) < 10 erg s cm, is 2 − 5 times greater than the field ELG d...
متن کاملClustering of galaxies around radio quasars at 0.5z0.8
We have observed the galaxy environments around a sample of 21 radio-loud, steepspectrum quasars at 0:5 # z # 0:82; spanning several orders of magnitude in radio luminosity. The observations also include background control fields used to obtain the excess number of galaxies in each quasar field. The galaxy excess was quantified using the spatial galaxy±quasar correlation amplitude, Bgq, and an ...
